KHFF AIN'T DONE YET THO
Don't forget that we've still got a week until Halloween, and KHFF has a little bit more to contribute before the season's over.
First and most directly KHFF-related, the early evening of Friday, October 29 will see the Knoxville Horror Film Fest Recap, an encore presentation of selected short films from our 2010 Festival, so if you weren't able to make it out this weekend and want to see what all the fuss is about, $5 gets you two hours of great scares. Films start PROMPTLY at 7pm, at Relix Variety Theatre.
Then at 10pm the same night (Oct 29) we get back to showing you something brand new: the Knoxville premiere of UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US, Audrey Ewell & Aaron Eites' feature documentary about Norwegian black metal. (Our friends Argentinum Astrum will be performing live following the screening.) $5 gets you a heavy metal Friday night. Combination passes to both screenings will be available at Relix Variety Theatre prior to the Recap event.
And then, finally, Saturday night, our first ever Jason Stalk will lead a pack of Voorhees from Market Square to the Bijou Theatre for their screening of FRIDAY THE 13TH (the original, duh) and the East Tennessee Paranormal Society's Ghost Tour of the Bijou. If you'd like to join us in our Jason Stalk, get to Market Square around 7:00pm with your hockey mask on and just stand around in a menacing manner; eventually we will all start shambling through Krutch Park, and the Stalk will have begun.
10.15.10 - PREVIEWS, ADVANCE TICKETS & ONE BADASS LINEUP
ONLY ONE WEEK LEFT!
KNOXVILLE HORROR FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW NIGHT AT PILOT LIGHT
First things first: this Sunday (10/17) the Knoxville Horror Film Festival will be taking over the first part of Sunday Movie Night at the unbeatable PILOT LIGHT, showing about an hour of stuff including two of last year's winners, trailers for a number of KHFF 2010 selections, and a sneak peek at one of our favorites from this year's Touring competition. (Show up to find out which one.) Admission is free, but bring cash for beers and tips. We'll be starting around 9:30, and we hope you'll stick around afterward for a particularly fun entry in Pilot Light's Sunday Movie Night repertoire...
KHFF 2010 LINEUP ANNOUNCED, AND TICKETS ON SALE NOW!
Take a look at our KHFF 2010 page to check out the semi-final lineup, including the fourteen films in our Touring competition, ten in our Local competition, and at least six more films screening out of competition on Saturday. (We'll likely be adding a few extra surprises in the days to come.) It all adds up to well over five hours of cinema on Friday night -- we're planning to let out right around 1am -- and another several hours on Saturday. (For those hoping to make it to the Tennessee Theatre's screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, COLIN should be over with plenty of time to get downtown...and for any zombies dancing in Thrill The World at 7pm, COLIN won't be starting until after 8.)
Now that the lineup's in place, the wait begins! Though we'll be offering a considerable number of tickets for sale at the door each night, we're bracing for a sellout, and you can play it safe by buying advance tickets through our friends at OLD CITY JAVA and HOT HORSE in the Old City and COMIXCHANGE on Chapman Highway. All three are very special to us at KHFF, personally and as partners, so we hope you'll take a moment to stop by and find out why. Tickets are sold cash only, and cost $10 each night or $17 for a two-night pass.
A little extra info about the tickets, and the festival: we're sorry to say that the logistics -- not to mention the content, which gets as extreme as you'd like in ways you might not see coming -- make it necessary for us to keep KHFF an 18 AND UP event. We apologize if this inconveniences any younger horror fans or budding filmmakers out there, but we're working on getting together an only slightly neutered and considerably less boozy event should the demand present itself.
And finally, because this isn't on the poster (we had to lure you here to the website somehow) both evenings of the 2010 Knoxville Horror Film Festival will begin fairly promptly at 7pm, with tickets going on sale at 6pm and doors opening very shortly after that. It's kind of early, yeah, but we've got a lot of ground to cover!
10.04.10 - SCREENPLAY CONTEST FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE
THE THREE BEST ENTRIES IN KHFF'S FIRST ANNUAL SCREENPLAY CONTEST ARE...
• Justin Simpson's LAURA
• Philip Tatler's EYEPOLE
• Paul Clouse's VOODOO DADDY
It wasn't an easy decision, hence the delayed announcement. But these are the three scripts that will compete for our Screenplay Contest prize package, and the victor will be announced during our KHFF Awards Ceremony on October 23. Hope to see you there, and get writing for next year! (For those looking to get into screenwriting, the KHFF crew heartily recommends the free scripting software CELTX, which offers more functionality than pro apps like Final Cut for 100% less cost!)
09.30.10 - KHFF HALLOWEEN WEEKEND FARE
BECAUSE ONE WEEKEND JUST ISN'T ENOUGH
FRIDAY OCTOBER 29 - BLACK METAL DOC "UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US"
Though we're still pulling things together for the main event on October 22 & 23, we wouldn't want to leave you without anything to do on Halloween weekend, so the grim cinema keeps coming! On Friday, October 29 KHFF and Relix Variety Theatre will be presenting the Knoxville premiere of Aaron Aites & Audrey Ewell's UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US, a feature-length documentary about Norway's culturally and musically infamous black metal movement. The film has been touring the festival circuit for the past year and we're thrilled to finally bring it through Knoxville. The screening will cost $5 and is scheduled for 10pm, but we're working on some pre- and post-show entertainment so you can make a night of it.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 30 - JASON STALK & HORROR AT THE BIJOU
The fun continues Saturday night at the Bijou Theatre, where a handful of winning films from KHFF will screen prior to the Bijou's presentation of the original FRIDAY THE 13th, which will itself be followed by a Ghost Tour of the Bijou Theatre by the East Tennessee Paranormal Research Society. (Tickets to both the movie and the ghost tour -- as well as a discounted combo pass -- are available here.) Show up by 7:30pm to catch all the KHFF winners!
Oh! And just prior to the Bijou screening we'll be collaborating with our friends from the Knoxville Zombie Walk on the first-of-its-kind JASON STALK...just throw on your hockey masks and meet us in Market Square. (There may even be a discounted FRIDAY THE 13th ticket in it for you.) More info will be announced at the Knoxville Horror Film Festival, October 22 & 23.
09.14.10 - FILMS, PRIZES & LIVE MUSIC @ KHFF 2010
KEEP THOSE LOCAL SUBMISSIONS COMING!
KHFF ANNOUNCES MORE DETAILS ABOUT OUR 2010 PROGRAMMING
There's less than six weeks left before KHFF 2010 hits Knoxville (and less than a month before we stop accepting submissions!) so we figured we'd offer a taste of what's in store. First of all we're pleased to announce that Knoxville duo DAMAGED PATIENTS will be presenting a set of their pitch black, video-spiked synth pop following our screening of COLIN on Saturday, October 23. (If you're interested in checking them out beforehand, they'll also be playing a CD release show at the Pilot Light on October 1.)
We're also excited to go ahead and reveal a few of the higher-profile touring films on deck for KHFF 2010. Though we're still knee-deep in submissions and expecting more before the October 10 late entry deadline, we've received a few we couldn't imagine keeping from horror-hungry Knoxville film fans. Among them are Jonathan van Tulleken's BAFTA-nominated OFF SEASON (USA), Arni Thor Jonsson's holiday chiller UNHOLY NIGHT (Iceland), Scooter Corkle's slow-burning CHLOE AND ATTIE (Canada), and Bobby Miller's shocking Sundance hit TUB (USA), all of which will be presented as a part of our competetive program on Friday, October 22. (Vist the KHFF blog for trailers and clips from all these films and more.)
Finally, we're also honored to be presenting LA PIÑATA (Spain), a new short by Manuel Arija, who directed last year's KHFF Best International Film MY LOVE LIVES IN THE SEWER. LA PIÑATA, along with other surprises tying back to last year's winners, will be presented out of competition as part of our Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 23.
AND SPEAKING OF THE AWARDS CEREMONY...
We'll be stocking up on fun goodies throughout the next month in anticipation of showering our award-winners with gifts (including swag from prize sponsors Something Weird Video, Rue Morgue, and
Famous Monsters of Filmland) but wanted to put this out there as incentive to get those submissions in: we're teaming up with some folks at the Bijou Theatre for an exciting film event on Saturday, October 30, and though they're keeping details on the screening quiet for the moment we've been cleared to announce that a handful of winning films from the 2010 Knoxville Horror Film Festival will be screening prior to the feature presentation! Suffice to say that's not all we have up our sleeves, so check back soon for more info!
08.09.10 - ZOMBIE WALK & COLIN FINDS A DISTRIBUTOR
GET UNDEAD FOR A BRISK WALK TO KHFF '10
KNOXVILLE ZOMBIE WALK 2010 TO COINCIDE WITH SATURDAY'S PROGRAM
Those familiar with the "Zombie Walk" phenomenon of the last decade will be pleased to know that this year's Knoxville Zombie Walk will be held on Saturday, October 23 to coincide with our second annual festival! Those who wish to participate should show up at the Sunsphere (in World's Fair Park...it's the big sphere that looks like a sun) around 5:30pm on Saturday in full zombie regalia. The legions of undead will then make their way to the Relix Variety Theatre, where we will be offering discount day-of admission to zombie walkers...as well as a few other special tie-ins to be announced. (Zombies wishing to continue strutting their stuff will continue on to friends of the fest Frightworks Haunted House.) Visit the Zombie Walk on Facebook for updates.
MARC PRICE'S COLIN ACQUIRED FOR US DISTRIBUTION
In other KHFF-related news, we're also happy to announce that Saturday night's feature presentation COLIN has finally been picked up for stateside release, according to this news item at Fangoria. Though our screening may yet turn out to be the Southeastern US Premiere (as we had been advertising it prior to this news) and will almost certainly be the first chance for Knoxville audiences to see this terrific film, upstart Walking Shadows plans to distribute it in major markets starting in October, with a hopefuly DVD and VOD release by Halloween. We're excited by the notion that KHFF-goers will now have the opportunity to share Colin with non-attendees, and congratulate director Mark Price & co for such an exciting development for their film.
Oh, and a tip: check back soon for more exciting news, including info on some exciting Halloween weekend screenings brought to you in part by KHFF.
07.08.10 - FIRST OFFICIAL DETAILS ON KHFF 2010
OFFICIAL DATES: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23
We’re pleased to finally announce the first round of details on 2010’s Knoxville Horror Film Festival!
First, an exciting change of venue:
After a shoving-room-only crowd at the Pilot Light last October, we’ve decided to move this year’s festival to the Relix Variety Theatre, in the heart of Knoxville’s newly-refreshed Happy Holler business district. Aside from offering ample neighborhood parking and proximity to restaurants and bars, Relix will also accommodate several times as many people as we were able to cram in last year.
As the venue for KHFF 2010 has grown, so has the festival itself! Friday, October 22 will follow last year’s format by showcasing a five-plus hour program of short horror films from Knoxville, the Southeast and beyond, voted on for prizes by both our house jury and the audience themselves. Instead of presenting the awards late on Friday,
however, we will be expanding the festival to a whole second evening: Saturday, October 23 will feature not only the KHFF Awards Ceremony but also a variety of other special entertainments we’re not quite ready to announce yet.
With one exception, that is: on Saturday night KHFF 2010 is honored to be presenting the Knoxville premiere of Marc Price’s British zombie flick Colin, which stole the spotlight at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival with its DIY origins (shot on video and cast via Facebook, the film’s reported budget was around $70) and inventive frame, which follows a newly-undead young man (Alastair Kirton) as he stumbles episodically through a post-apocalyptic London. We are thrilled to celebrate the do-it-yourself spirit by making Colin our first KHFF feature presentation.
Stay tuned for further announcements, including ticketing information, extracurricular events, and the first wave of short films! And don’t forget that we are accepting film submissions through October 1, as well as entries in our first annual KHFF Screenplay Contest, due one month earlier.
See you in October!
06.06.10 - KNOXVILLE HORROR FILM FESTIVAL CALL FOR FILM & SCREENPLAY SUBMISSIONS
ENTRIES DUE SEPTEMBER 1
KHFF 2010's categories for submission are as follows:
• LOCAL or REGIONAL SHORT FILMS (max ~25 minutes)
The Knoxville Horror Film Festival was created to showcase local DIY genre filmmakers, and we are glad to again welcome films from all over the Southeast to join in the grisly fun. We aren't picky about production value so long as it's fun to watch.
• TOURING SHORT FILMS (max ~30 minutes)
We were lucky enough to feature several high-profile national and international horror shorts in KHFF '09, and plan to continue helping bring these films to the audience they deserve. Though a number of the films in this category will be hand-selected by the KHFF crew, we are honored to accept submissions as well.
• LOCAL or REGIONAL "SHORT SHORTS" (max 10 minutes)
The shorter the films are, the less time they take to make, and the more we can cram into an evening of KHFF! Brew up a batch of fake blood on a Friday night, grab a camera, and see where the weekend takes you. (Though touring short films meeting the length restrictions are welcome to submit to this category -- and enjoy the reduced submission fee -- award judging for "short shorts" will be limited to works produced in the Southeast.)
• LOCAL or REGIONAL TRAILERS (max 3 minutes, no submission fee)
Is your movie too long? Or not done? Or doesn't actually exist? We are hoping to find the time to toss a few "coming attractions" into the KHFF mix, and are glad to consider any movie trailers that get sent our way. Those chosen will be voted on as part of this year's Audience Awards, with the possibility of a subsequent KHFF-sponsored screening of the film!
